A Carbon Analyst is responsible for monitoring, assessing, and managing carbon emissions and carbon-related data for organizations, industries, or government agencies. Their work focuses on measuring greenhouse gas emissions, particularly carbon dioxide (CO2), resulting from activities like energy production, transportation, manufacturing, and agriculture.

Using scientific methodologies, data analysis techniques, and carbon accounting frameworks, Carbon Analysts track emissions, pinpoint sources of carbon pollution, and evaluate the environmental impact of various operations. They provide data-driven insights and recommendations to help organizations reduce their carbon footprint, comply with regulatory standards, and progress toward sustainability and net-zero targets.

Key Responsibilities

Measure and Quantify
Scope 1, Scope 2, and Scope 3 emissions in line with the GHG Protocol.

Develop Carbon Inventories
and track corporate emissions performance

Strategy Development

The CSO develops a comprehensive sustainability strategy that aligns with the company’s vision and business objectives. This includes setting goals, defining key performance indicators (KPIs), and establishing a roadmap for sustainable growth.

Ensure compliance with regulations
such as carbon reporting frameworks such as CDP, TCFD, SBTi, and CSRD..

Conduct Lifecycle Assessments (LCA)
to assess the environmental impact of products and operations.

Advise on Carbon Offset Strategies
and market-based mechanisms such as carbon credits and emissions trading..

Assists Organisations in Sustainability Disclosure

Collaborate with cross-functional teams
to integrate carbon reduction initiatives into corporate sustainability strategies.

Background and Sectors

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Environmental Science, Sustainability, Engineering, or Finance.
  • Strong understanding of GHG accounting standards, including the GHG Protocol and ISO 14064.
  • Experience with carbon accounting software (e.g., Sphera, Persefoni, or Watershed).
  • Knowledge of regulatory frameworks, including the EU Emissions Trading System (ETS), SEC Climate Disclosure Rules, and CBAM.
  • Ability to interpret climate risk assessments and net-zero transition plans.
  • Strong analytical and data management skills.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement abilities.
