Job Description

A UK-based clean energy investor-developer / IPP (backed by long-term infrastructure capital) is hiring a BESS Director to originate and deliver a bankable BESS pipeline from early-stage opportunity through FID, contracting close, and operational handover. The role sits at the intersection of development, commercial structuring, and execution, with direct accountability for value creation across land, grid, capex strategy, and revenue optimisation.

The BESS Director will lead the commercial structuring and negotiation of delivery and route-to-market agreements required to achieve bankability and long-term asset performance, ensuring risk allocation, performance regimes, and lender requirements are fully aligned.

The role is London-based with regular travel across the UK to project sites, counterparties, and key stakeholders.

Job Responsibilities

Origination and pipeline build

  • Originate BESS opportunities via landowners, agents, developers, DNOs/NGESO interfaces, and corporate/utility counterparties.
  • Lead site screening (grid availability, constraints, planning risk, land terms) and prioritise projects through a clear investment case.
  • Own commercial terms from heads of terms through exclusivity, acquisition, and partnering structures.

Development leadership

  • Drive development programmes: grid applications and milestones, planning strategy, stakeholder engagement, environmental constraints, and consenting timelines.
  • Coordinate internal and external teams (development, engineering, legal, finance, market analytics) to progress projects to “ready-to-build”.
  • Build project financial models with the investment team, including capex, opex, degradation, dispatch assumptions, and downside cases.

Execution, contracting and closing

  • Lead procurement strategy and negotiation of:

    • EPC and BoP contracts (delivery scope, LDs, performance guarantees, interfaces)
    • O&M and LTSA arrangements (availability regimes, spares strategy, response times)
    • Warranty, augmentation and lifecycle planning agreements
  • Own risk allocation across contracts and align them with lender and investor requirements.
  • Lead transaction execution through IC approvals, FID readiness, and final documentation.

Revenue and route-to-market

  • Structure and negotiate revenue agreements with:

    • Optimisers and aggregators (dispatch rights, revenue share, performance KPIs)
    • Traders and suppliers (routes to market, credit support, collateral)
    • IPPs and utilities (tolling, capacity-style products, hybrid structures)
  • Build a flexible revenue strategy across merchant, contracted and hybrid approaches, aligned to asset duration, location and grid services.

Stakeholder management and governance

  • Act as the senior commercial interface with investors, lenders, legal counsel, and strategic partners.
  • Present investment papers and commercial recommendations to internal committees and boards.
  • Build and lead a small team over time (commercial managers, analysts, development support), setting standards and cadence.

Qualifications

Experience

  • Significant experience leading BESS origination and development in the UK market, with direct exposure to contracting close.
  • Track record of negotiating complex commercial agreements across delivery and revenue:

    • EPC / BoP / O&M / LTSA
    • Optimisation/trading / aggregation/tolling
  • Strong understanding of UK power markets revenue drivers for BESS (merchant dynamics, ancillary services, capacity-style revenues, credit and collateral).

Technical and commercial skillset

  • Strong commercial judgement on risk allocation, performance regimes, LDs, warranties, and interface management.
  • Strong modelling literacy (project economics, sensitivity analysis, downside protection).
  • Confident communicator with senior stakeholders; able to lead negotiations and close.

Education (preferred)

  • Degree in engineering, economics, finance, law, or a related discipline (or equivalent experience).

What the organization offers

  • A senior seat in a growth platform with capital committed to scale UK flexibility infrastructure.
  • Direct ownership of commercial outcomes across origination, contracting, and revenue strategy.
  • Exposure to repeatable deal structures and long-term value creation, not single-project delivery.
  • Competitive salary £130,000 to £170,000 per annum (plus bonus and long-term incentives)
  • Flexible working approach, with London as the core base.
