Our client, a leading UK-based transportation group with international reach, is seeking a Head of Sustainability to lead its environmental strategy and initiatives. Operating across shipping, freight logistics, and integrated transport services, the company is headquartered in London and is deeply committed to transforming its operations through sustainability leadership, innovation, and compliance with evolving environmental legislation.

As Head of Sustainability, you will shape and execute the organisation’s long-term sustainability agenda. This is a strategic leadership role suited to a seasoned sustainability professional with a strong track record across the transport and logistics value chain. You will drive enterprise-wide sustainability efforts, focusing on decarbonisation, regulatory alignment, ESG performance, and stakeholder engagement.

You will report to the executive leadership team and work closely with operations, fleet management, engineering, procurement, and external partners to integrate sustainability into all aspects of the business.

Job Responsibilities

  • Design and lead the company’s sustainability strategy, aligning with business goals and UK/EU environmental frameworks such as CSRD, SECR, and TCFD.
  • Champion the decarbonisation roadmap, focusing on fleet transformation, fuel alternatives, energy efficiency, and emissions reduction.
  • Embed ESG criteria into procurement, asset management, and logistics operations, ensuring sustainable sourcing and supplier accountability.
  • Lead climate risk and opportunity assessments, developing adaptive strategies that enhance resilience in the face of environmental and regulatory change.
  • Drive innovation pilots — such as electrification trials, carbon capture technologies, and AI-led route optimization — to reduce the environmental footprint.
  • Collaborate with public authorities, trade associations, and industry regulators to represent the company’s environmental commitments and ensure external alignment.
  • Develop and manage ESG performance dashboards and reporting frameworks, translating data into actionable insight for the executive board.
  • Guide internal change management efforts, creating staff engagement programmes and leadership training on climate literacy, ESG performance, and sustainability culture.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 7-10 years of senior-level sustainability or ESG experience, ideally in transportation, maritime, freight, logistics, or heavy industry.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Engineering, Sustainability, or a related field; postgraduate or professional certifications (e.g., IEMA, GHG Protocol, ISO 14001) are desirable.
  • Proven success leading cross-functional ESG or climate programmes in complex organisations.
  • Deep understanding of UK/EU environmental regulations, decarbonisation pathways, and climate-related risk disclosures.
  • Skilled in stakeholder engagement, from board-level reporting to industry collaboration.
  • Strategic thinker with a hands-on, delivery-focused approach and the ability to lead and inspire change across diverse teams.

What the organization offers

  • Base Salary: GBP 120,000 -130,000 + Benefits
  • Hybrid work flexibility (London HQ)
  • Opportunity to shape ESG transformation for a major transport group
  • Access to ESG leadership programmes and ongoing professional development
  • Collaborative environment with a strong purpose-driven mission
