Job Description

A leading London-based asset management firm is seeking a Sustainable Finance Director to lead its ESG and sustainable finance strategy. This senior leadership role combines strategic oversight with hands-on execution, embedding sustainability across investment processes, portfolios, product development, stewardship, and client reporting.

Reporting to the Chief Investment Officer or Head of Responsible Investment, the director will influence investment decisions, support product innovation, and represent the firm externally to investors, regulators, and industry forums. The role is ideal for a forward-thinking, impact-driven professional with deep experience in sustainable investing and ESG integration within asset management.

Job Responsibilities

Strategy & Governance

  • Develop and implement the firm’s sustainable finance strategy across all asset classes and investment teams.
  • Build ESG integration guidance for portfolio managers, including materiality assessment, controversy management, and transition risk factors.
  • Chair or contribute to internal committees (responsible investment, product, risk) to drive ESG-related decisions and policies.
  • Partner with risk and compliance on sustainability policies, controls, and audit processes linked to product claims and disclosures.


Product & Client Support

  • Lead sustainable product development and enhancements, including fund positioning, prospectus content, client reporting, and disclosure packs.
  • Support RFPs, DDQs, and institutional due diligence with clear, defensible ESG information.
  • Brief distribution and client teams on ESG positioning, stewardship activity, and sustainability metrics.


Stewardship & Engagement

  • Oversee the firm’s stewardship framework, including engagement themes, company selection, escalation pathways, and outcome tracking.
  • Manage proxy voting approach, governance, and rationale documentation.
  • Ensure engagement reporting meets institutional standards and client expectations.


Data, Reporting & Vendor Management

  • Oversee ESG data architecture, vendor relationships, and methodology governance.
  • Improve data quality, controls, and audit trails for sustainability metrics.
  • Translate complex ESG data into clear guidance for investment teams and clients.


Leadership & Stakeholder Management

  • Lead, mentor, and grow the sustainable investing function (team size dependent on firm).
  • Influence senior investment leaders and other stakeholders with practical, actionable ESG recommendations.
  • Represent the firm at external industry events, client meetings, and regulatory consultations.

Qualifications

Experience & Skills

  • 10+ years in sustainable finance, ESG integration, or responsible investing, preferably within asset management or a comparable investment setting.
  • Proven ability to implement ESG governance and embed integration across investment teams.
  • Strong client-facing experience with institutional investors, including mandate discussions and ESG reporting.
  • Technical expertise in ESG investment approaches, sustainability disclosures, and regulatory frameworks (SFDR, EU Taxonomy, TCFD, ISSB).
  • Experience working with ESG datasets, climate and transition metrics, and reporting methodology.
  • Senior stakeholder management with excellent written and verbal communication.
  • Commercial judgment and ability to balance investment integrity with product growth.

Education & Professional Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s, CFA, or relevant sustainable finance credentials preferred.
