Head of Sustainability, London, United Kingdom

A leading organisation is seeking a dynamic and visionary Head of Sustainability to spearhead their sustainability strategy in London. This key leadership role will focus on driving the implementation of innovative sustainability initiatives, advancing the clean energy transition, and achieving long-term environmental impact.

As the Head of Sustainability, you will report directly to the Director of Estates and Facilities and play a crucial role in embedding sustainability principles across the organisation. Your efforts will help shape our commitment to achieving net-zero carbon emissions and integrating sustainable practices into all aspects of our operations.

Job Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement a comprehensive sustainability strategy that aligns with organisational goals and regulatory requirements.
  • Lead sustainability communications, fostering a culture of environmental responsibility throughout the organisation.
  • Oversee the integration of sustainable practices into operations, planning, and project development.
  • Manage key sustainability projects, ensuring they are aligned with industry standards and best practices.
  • Monitor progress towards net-zero targets, providing regular updates to senior leadership.
  • Drive the development and adoption of environmental management systems, including compliance with standards such as ISO 14001 and BREEAM.
  • Engage with internal and external stakeholders, building strong partnerships to enhance sustainability outcomes.
  • Represent the organisation at local, regional, and national sustainability forums.
  • Lead and mentor a dedicated sustainability team, fostering professional growth and development.
  • Coordinate with operating and functional teams to ensure alignment with sustainability objectives.

Qualifications

  • Degree in Sustainability, Environmental Science, Energy Management, or a related field.
  • Proven track record of leading sustainability strategies in large, complex organisations.
  • Strong knowledge of environmental legislation and standards, including ISO 14001 and BREEAM.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and stakeholder engagement skills.
  • Experience in managing sustainability projects, from conception through to execution and evaluation.
  • Demonstrable ability to influence at senior levels and inspire cultural change.
  • A professional qualification, such as a Chartered Environmentalist, is highly desirable.
  • Experience within the higher education sector would be advantageous but not essential.

  • A competitive salary of £90,000–£120,000 per annum.
